Home Espresso Machines - Buying Guide

Whether you’re taking your first steps into espresso or upgrading your setup, the right home espresso machine can completely change how you enjoy coffee. Every model we stock is chosen for build quality, reliability and the ability to deliver true café-style results without leaving your kitchen.

Types of espresso machine

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Bean-to-cup machines handle everything for you — they grind, dose and brew automatically at the press of a button, perfect for busy mornings or households that want great consistency. Semi-automatic and manual espresso machines generally offer more control over temperature, pressure and extraction time, letting you fine-tune every shot (features vary by model). They’re ideal for anyone who enjoys the craft of coffee making and wants to replicate a barista workflow at home.

Key features to consider

Think about how hands-on you’d like to be and how much space you have. A built-in grinder saves counter space and keeps things simple, while a separate coffee grinder gives you extra flexibility to experiment. Steam wands are great for those who love cappuccinos or flat whites — look for adjustable pressure if you want silky microfoam. Consider boiler type too: single-boiler machines are compact and affordable, while dual-boilers allow you to steam and brew simultaneously for faster preparation.

Getting the best from your setup

To make the most of any espresso machine, use freshly roasted beans and a high-quality burr grinder. Pairing your machine with a good grinder lets you adjust the grind size for perfect extraction, bringing out more sweetness and body in each cup. We also recommend regular cleaning and descaling to keep your machine running smoothly and tasting fresh.

It can depend on how you like to brew. Bean-to-cup espresso machines are the easiest option — they grind and brew automatically for consistent results. Manual and semi-automatic machines give you much more control over the shot, perfect for anyone who enjoys hands-on, barista-style coffee making. Single boiler machines are generally most affordable and are an easy way to get into a traditional style machine. Heat exchanger machines allow for a bit more power and make it easier to steam milk. Dual boiler machines have a separate steam boiler and support brewing and steaming at the same time with the most consistency.

If your espresso machine doesn’t include a built-in grinder, you’ll get far better flavour using a dedicated burr grinder. Freshly ground beans extract more sweetness and aroma. Explore our range of coffee grinders to find one that matches your setup.

Bean-to-cup machines automate grinding, dosing, and brewing for convenience and speed. Manual machines can give you more control over separate variables, for a more traditional, hands-on experience. Both can produce excellent coffee — it’s all about your preference.

Not all machines can be descaled, but if yours includes a heating system that supports it, we recommend descaling every few months, depending on water hardness and usage. Wipe group heads and steam wands after every session, and perform a backflush with espresso cleaning fluid (if supported) after each day’s use. Regular maintenance keeps flavour consistent and extends your machine’s lifespan. Also be sure to use filtered water if your machine doesn't have a water filter.

Absolutely! Our freshly roasted coffee beans work perfectly in all espresso machines — from bean-to-cup to manual setups. Choose your favourite roast and enjoy café-quality flavour at home.
